28mm Hessians: IR10 Malsburg

I had 5 battalions of Palatine infantry serving with my French army but they have gone. I am converting them to Hessians and here are the first two battalions representing IR10 Malsburg.

This is the last post this year and I wish you all a Happy New Year.

28mm AWI: 1st New York

Whilst continuing with my SYW Hessians I realised that by doing so I had available a full division of 8 battalions (500 men each) to serve in the AWI. The only issue is the flags and either I can live with the SYW ones or I could do a separate flag base just for the AWI.

So then I looked at the American rebels. I have decided to start with a New York brigade of 6 battalions. These are fun to do because each battalion has a different uniform plus economical as I can use the cheap and excellent Perry box.

Hessian infantry in the AWI formed up in 3 ranks while the Continentals used 2 ranks, as did the British. So you can see the far thinner American line of regulars. This NY battaion is 400 men strong, each figure representing 25 men. Militia, when I come to do them, will be in a far less dense line.

So this is a small detour on the road of my Hessians for the SYW.

PS Just to note that I have had over one million hits on my blog!

28mm Hessians: IR 3 Füsilier-Regiment Gilsa

Another fusilier regiment, with it's grenadiers which will be converged with those of IR9. The uniforms and flags are for the end of the war.

Figures are from Black Hussar with a Foundry officer in the first battalion and a Crusader officer in the second.

28mm Hessians: Two 6pdr batteries

Back in November 2021 I painted two guns and crew and I've had the remainder lurking around to finish but I've avoided them as the guns are a chore. But now they are done and that sorts out the Hessian artillery for my army. Hesse-Cassel was somewhat light on artillery and during the early SYW had to borrow 12pdrs from their Hanoverian neighbours.

For details about Christian Rogge's colour scheme for the guns see his blog at https://crogges7ywarmies.blogspot.com/

The gun models themselves are from Minden Miniatures and the crews a mix of Black Hussar and Perrys.

28mm Hessians: IR 2 Füsilier-Regiment von Bartheld

Its quite a while since I added to my Hessian force to fight my French army. The latter is about 75% complete with just the cavalry to finished. But the Hessians need attention so here I have added a fusilier regiment, with it's grenadiers which will be converged with those of IR4. I'll finish another fusilier regiment before the end of the year. The uniforms and flags are for the end of the war.

Figures are from Black Hussar.

28mm Celtic cavalry 1 and 2

The first two of seven cavalry units planned. We are in the home stretch in this project.

40mm Austrian:Kreisinfanterieregiment Württemberg

This is the last of the regulars in my Austrian/Reich army although I still have one Grenz battalion to paint. Blue coats with yellow facings make a pleasant change and the lovely flags come from Fredrick Aubert. This was technically a Fusiler regiment and had mitres at some stage in it's history. Soubise considered it to be 'average' which was a step up from many other Kreis units.

40mm Austrian Converged Grenadier battalion

The third, and last, of my Converged Grenadier battalions for my 40mm army.

28mm Celtic chariots 2 (Victrix)

The second, and last, batch of chariots. They were fun to assemble and paint and are lovely models.

28mm Punic War: Triarii of 4th Legio Niger Aper (Black Boar)

So, with the exception of velites, that concludes this first of two Roman Legios for the 2nd Carthaginian war.

28mm Celtic chariots 1

The first batch of chariots for the Celtic army from Victrix. These are quite complicated to assemble so here are my tips.

  1. assemble and paint the chariot.

  2. assemble and paint the horses

  3. assemble and paint the crew (only the chaps steering horses)

  4. base the horses/chariots.

  5. Attach reins to steering guys and paint.

  6. Insert/glue reins into horse harness and glue man to chariot base. (delicate)

  7. Paint forward reins on sprue. Remove and glue to harness and horse.(delicate)

    You should follow Victrix instructions!

28mm Punic War: Principes of 4th Legio Niger Aper (Black Boar)

This follows on from the Hastati I showed you in July. Here is the second line of Principes, sporting the same LBMS yellow shields but with red plumes. On the subject of LBMS transfers I wanted to say a big 'thank you' to Steve Hales for replacing some of the transfers which deteriorated due to age. It's not a common problem, I hear, but it does occasionally happen with transfer sheets that have been lurking in the back of a drawer.

Next up the Triarii. I have not yet decided the shield colour of the next Legion (2nd Legio) but it will probably be red.

28mm Gallic Armoured Warriors 2

Armoured warrior by Victrix. This is the second batch of these chaps.

Sunday 6 August 2023

28mm Punic War: Carthaginian elephant

This is one of the two elephants from the Victrix set with transfers from LBMS. Actually you can add shields and javelin quivers but the former cover up parts of the design so I have left them off for the moment.

28mm Punic Wars Carthaginian Veterans and Roman Hastati.

I'm showing today two units. One, which you have previously seen in January 2022, but which I have rebased on 80mm x 50mm, is a three-based Carthaginian unit of veterans.

The other unit is 4 bases of Hastati in the first Roman legion I will do – all with these yellow shields from LBMS.

Figures are all Victrix and bases are from Charlie Foxtrot.

28mm SYW French: IR73 Haynault

These are the last two battalions of my 23 battalion strong Franco-Palatine force. The lovely flags are from Dave Morfitt at his 'Not by Appointment' blog. In terms of cavalry I will need about 25 squadrons and I have finished eight so some way to go. The artillery are largely finished.
