28mm SYW Hessians: IR7 Leibregiment 2nd BTN 1763

This is the last of the Hessian battalions for my army. The figures are from a Ukrainian designer/manufacturer Vladimir Zhiko which I bought quite a while ago. The flags are from Frederick Aubert.

28mm SYW Hessians: IR7 Leibregiment 1763

Here is the first battalion of that regiment (the second will follow soon) and these two units will finish off the infantry in my large Hessian army of 22 battalions. It's worth noting that this regiment went through a bewildering number of uniform changes, not just facings, during the SYW.

Beautiful flags are by Frederic Aubert.

28mm SYW Hessians: KR1 and KR2

Back in December 2020 I painted the first Hessian cavalry regiment - KR2 Gens d'Armes (red facings). I have just finished KR1 Prinz Wilhem (blue facings). It's worth saying again that I have given them cuirasses although they were not issued until after the war. The lovely figures are from Black Hussar. The plan is to do two brigades totalling 16 squadrons.

Flags are by Frederic Aubert.

The last of the converged grenadier battalions.

28mm Hessians: IR12 Erbprinz

This regiment had 'Sang de Boeuf' coloured facings or Bull's blood, a very dark red. The lovely flags are from my friend Frederick Aubert, as are all my Hessian flags. Figures are largely from Black Hussar. I have almost finished the Hessian infantry. Just one grenadier battalion to go and the two battalions of IR7.

28mm Hessians: IR10 Malsburg

I had 5 battalions of Palatine infantry serving with my French army but they have gone. I am converting them to Hessians and here are the first two battalions representing IR10 Malsburg.

This is the last post this year and I wish you all a Happy New Year.

28mm Hessians: IR 3 Füsilier-Regiment Gilsa

Another fusilier regiment, with it's grenadiers which will be converged with those of IR9. The uniforms and flags are for the end of the war.

Figures are from Black Hussar with a Foundry officer in the first battalion and a Crusader officer in the second.

28mm Hessians: Two 6pdr batteries

Back in November 2021 I painted two guns and crew and I've had the remainder lurking around to finish but I've avoided them as the guns are a chore. But now they are done and that sorts out the Hessian artillery for my army. Hesse-Cassel was somewhat light on artillery and during the early SYW had to borrow 12pdrs from their Hanoverian neighbours.

For details about Christian Rogge's colour scheme for the guns see his blog at https://crogges7ywarmies.blogspot.com/

The gun models themselves are from Minden Miniatures and the crews a mix of Black Hussar and Perrys.

28mm Hessians: IR 2 Füsilier-Regiment von Bartheld

Its quite a while since I added to my Hessian force to fight my French army. The latter is about 75% complete with just the cavalry to finished. But the Hessians need attention so here I have added a fusilier regiment, with it's grenadiers which will be converged with those of IR4. I'll finish another fusilier regiment before the end of the year. The uniforms and flags are for the end of the war.

Figures are from Black Hussar.

28mm SYW Lieutenant Generals for the French and Hessians

So progress is slow but I am getting there on these SYW armies. The top picture shows the Lieutenant General of the first French Division, the Chevalier du Muy and an ADC with telescope (both from Black Hussar). He has two maréchal de camp, comte de Vence and comte de Chabot commanding his two brigade totalling 9 battalions. Both these figures are Perry conversions.

The bottom picture shows Lieutenant General Gilsa with an ADC (a Foundry figures and a Black Hussar figure). He is ably (one hopes) assisted by Major-Generals Toll and Bischausen and this division consists of eight battalions. One figure if from Perry and the other Black Hussar.

Both these divisions are now finished.

28mm Hessians: Re-flagged and re-numbered IR4 Wilke

Previously I have been focused on the French and Palatine forces which are now largely finished.

Now it's time to return to the Hessians and I have decided to re-flag the three regiments I have already done. Two of them will just need new flags but one of them (the subject of this post) needs to be a new regiment as well. Previously this regiment was IR7 Leib (see post December 2021) but I have been corresponding with Frederic Aubert (see his FB page SYWBS Seven Years War Battle System)where he has done a massive amount of work/research on many armies of the period).

I have concluded that my current flags are too late and Leib was just a very complicated regiment. It had straw facings in the SYW and the AWI but flirted also with pink facings/flags in the post SYW period.I have decided to change my flags to 1763. See the attached chart from Fredick which shows the bewildering changes to Hessian flags from the early SYW to AWI. I had previously used flags from columns AA and AB and have now changed to columns M and N. So the straw facings of IR7 Leib have now become the straw facings of IR4 Wilke with the new flags of that regiment. This was the easiest option requiring the least amount of re-painting.

The other regiments finished (IR5 and IR8) will just get new flags with no other changes to facings and I will show these soon.

28mm SYW Hessian Infantry: IR7 Leib Regiment

I painted these two battalions back in October 2017 http://nigbilpainter.blogspot.com/2017/10/hessian-leib-regiment.html

but I am now doing them in my new style with new style flags. They will be brigaded with IR11 Prinz von Anhalt, as will their grenadiers. Eight battalions for the first division of Lieutenant-General Gilsa.

28mm SYW Hessian 6pdr battery

Figures are Perry's Hessians from their AWI range and the guns are Prussian 6pdrs from Minden Miniatures.

28mm Hessians: 1760-63 KR2 Gens d'Armes

In 1760 the four Reiter regiments of cavalry were converted by the new Landgraf to cuirassiers although, according to Kronoskaf, they were not given cuirasses until after the end of the war. In my army they have them. Actually you would be hard-pressed to find miniature figures without the cuirasse and the nearest example would be 1806 Prussian cuirassiers although the bicorne would need to be replaced.

This is quite a pretty regiment in my view and the Black Hussar figures are lovely. You even get a choice with each figure of 4 different right arms.

I decided that the flags for this regiment shown on Kronoskaf were clearly pre-1760. There is a clue in a regimental plate (I would guess late 1760s to 1770s) for the Dragoon regiment Dalwigk as to what the cuirassier flags might have looked like. It is strange that all Hessian dragoons carried the swallow-tailed standard except for this Dalwigk which suggests that at some date the 4 cuirassier regiments might have been converted to dragoons. But I have no further information on this, suffice to say that the Dalwigk flag will form the basis of the new flags for the 4 Hessian cuirassier regiments. Stylistically, they fit in with my other Hessian flags.
