18mm Old Glory: SYW/WAS Prussians: IR 5 Braunschweig 1st BTN

 Another battalion done with fab flags from Dave Morfitt. There seems to be some dispute on Kronoskaf about the facing colour, either white or buff. I'm in the later camp as this regiment's inhaber was Ferdinand of Brunswick who is always portrayed in regimentals with buff facings.

large battalions and enjoying this project very much – accordingly, all other projects are pushed to the back!

18mm Old Glory: SYW/WAS Austrians: Sachsen-Gotha Dragoons

 Twenty eight figures (four squadrons of seven) of this very hard fighting Dragoon regiment.

Technically I should field six squadrons and a company of horse grenadiers but I think it's large enough as it is although I might field some of the latter.

Another large battalion to add to this growing army. I don't normally add guard battalions to my armies as they are not very representative but I had the figures available so thought 'why not' as this regiment had such an impressive history, not to mention a pretty uniform.

18mm Old Glory: WAS Austrians: IR Deutschmeister 2nd BTN

 Another battalion of Old Glory's SYW Austrian range. The lovely flags are from Dave Morfitt's range of Charles VI flags which are suitable for the WAS and early SYW. They are much more interesting than the common 'yellow' in use by the end of the SYW. Plus the infantry form up in 4 ranks, which means, if you want, that you can base them differently, as I both like and do.

18mm Old Glory: SYW/WAS Prussians: 1/23 Bandemer Converged Grenadiers

 These are converged grenadiers of IR1 and IR23, both with silver-faced mitres, and they featured in most of the major SYW battles. The officer of IR23 is wearing a mitre which is incorrect (officers always wore a tricorne) but lets assume he lost his headwear from the hot gust of a cannonball, and had to make do with the first thing he could find. Interestingly, officers in Hanoverian service could wear the mitre.

Four 'big' battalions for the Prussians are finished.

Years ago I painted up an army of SYW Prussians using Old Glory figures. When I say 'years ago' I probably mean at least 40 years ago. I always loved the dynamism of the infantry although I hated, and still do, the cavalry mounted on pygmy horses. Anyway, you may have seen some of my Austrian units (the cavalry in particular are Eureka figures)

which I posted here in April.

So here is the first of the Prussian units. Grand scale, you could say, in the sense that each battalion has 36 figures. Note that I replace the bendy original flag staves with steel pins to enable the use of larger flags.

Anyway I am pleased with the results.

28mm WAS/SYW French: IR55 Waldner (Swiss) 2nd battalion

 

Here is the second battalion of Waldner and the final battalion of my French army. I've also finished off more generals. All that remains to do is some cavalry generals.

 Here is the first of this two-battalion regiment and, when both are finished, that completes my French army of 22 battalions, 26 squadrons and three batteries.

Here is the finished regiment. Just one regiment to go until this army is completed so I thought I'd add a splash of red in the form of a Swiss regiment.

Back in April 2010 I painted this regiment for a friend. I was living in Thailand at the time (what a great place!!) and my camera was the opposite of hi-end.

But I promised myself that I would have this regiment in my own army one day. My French army is aimed to be for the end of the SYW and this uniform may have been the WAS version but I have given myself artistic licence. Furthermore the earlier time frame had this as a two battalion regiment but by the SYW it was down to one. So two is what I will do.

The uniform for the WAS was as per the Biles illustration (yellow coat). By 1758 the coat was pale grey/white with yellow cuffs and by 1761 it had changed again. The flags were by Dave Morfitt.

One last note about the drummers' livery. Stanisław Leszczyński was Duke of Lorraine and Barrois so while the regiment's drummers (according to Kronoskaf) used the French royal livery in the SYW, my suspicion is that for the earlier WAS period, the drummers might have used the livery of the Duke of Lorraine based upon his coat of arms of a bull's head on a yellow background.

Here is the C-in-C of my French Napoleonic army, although which marshal has yet to be decided.

I have painted these in 'almost' full dress. I say 'almost' because although they have their plumes, and some have their epaulettes as well, none of them have their laced boots. That's because the Perry plastic sculpts don't have them. Colourful chaps though.

40mm SYW: Lieutenant-General Friedrich Wilhelm Baron von Seydlitz

Here is a two-figure command group for the cavalry of my Prussian army. The Seydlitz figure is a cuirassier officer (in resin) from Day of Battle Games and the hussar is a metal Fleischhacker from Sash and Saber, both in the USA. Postal rates to Europe from that country have gone up enormously so I'm having to limit future orders.

 

15mm PunicRomans: Cromarty Forge Hastati

Here are some beautiful printed figures from Cromarty Forge, the first printed figures I have ever painted. They are available from The Plastic Soldier company in the UK and Excellent Minis in Europe- I bought from the latter. Actually the best place to see detailed pictures is on the Cromarty Forge website.

They are a little tricky to cut out (you need to get the shields out first) but lovely to paint. The issue, and it's a small one, is with the shields. The detailing is microscopically raised so difficult to pick out with paint with any accuracy. If someone made decals or transfers that fitted these shields then that would be perfect – I wrote to Steven Hales at LBMS but have not heard from him.

Highly recommended and next up on this project will be some Numidian cavalry. Impetus basing.
