New French SYW ordering now pre-eBay

Starting in week 45 (beginning of November) we will be painting 12 battalions of SYW/WAS French from Black Hussar’s new range using the kneeling and loading poses but basing them in such a way that the bayonets are safe from overhanging the bases, see the pictures.

Each battalion will be 24 figures strong based on 4 bases so suitable for rules like Maurice. The regiments are as follows:

I’m letting you know now so that anybody interested in purchasing can give us instructions now on regiments/facings, basing etc. The list can be changed now, the basing can be changed and quantities can also vary within reason. Just write to me. Otherwise, I will just paint to the list and they will go onto eBay in due course. Price is $180 a battalion plus postage. Discounts for ordering in bulk!

Erzherzog Leopold Cuirassiers

All the Austrian cuirassier regiments look the same (except for the blue faced Modena regiment) - red facings on a white coat. But there are minor differences. For example, this regiment has red trousers (A-Z last week had buff) and silver buttons (A-Z last week had no cuff buttons and the remaining buttons were brass).

Next week - dragoons, for a change.

Anhalt-Zerbst Cuirassiers

Here we go with nine Austrian SYW cavalry regiments. This is the Anhalt-Zerbst Cuirassiers, a regiment raised back in 1682. I've painted 5 squadrons of 4 figures plus an extra carabinier company (a strong company of 3 figures) that I don't show in the pictures. As I will do 4 regiments of Cuirassiers the 12 figures of carabiniers will be combined in an elite reserve unit. In practical terms there is no real difference between cuirassiers and carabiniers and, indeed, as far as I know, no manufacturer makes the distinction either.

The figures are all Crusader and I like them as they have a quiet menace about them.

The last of the Austrian grenadiers..............................

That's the infantry finished..........now on to the cavalry. Four Cuirassier regiments, five Dragoon regiments and more Hussars. Gulp!

Roth Würzburg Infantry Regiment

There were two Wurzburg regiments in Austrian service and you have already seen the Blue one in a previous post. This regiment is the better-known of the pair and it was raised slightly earlier.

On September 16 1756 at Werneck, Adam Friedrich Bishop of Würzburg and Duke of Franconia signed a convention with Empress Maria Theresa by which he would supply two infantry regiments for at least two years: the first regiment would be provided at the bishop's expense while the second would be under Austrian pay (40 fl./man). On December 20 1756, the first of these regiments “Rot-Würzburg”, consisting of  2 battalions (each of 6 fusilier coys) and 2 grenadier companies for a total of 1,860 men, had already taken service with the Austrian Army and left for Bohemia. It had been raised from troopers of the 3 existing Würzburg infantry regiments (Hutten and Drachsdorff regiments became the first and second battalions respectively and were brought up to strength with 400 men from the third regiment, Kolb).

The regiment was organised similar to the Austrian infantry in 2 Feldbataillone and 2 companies of grenadiers. It fought with the Austrian army from late in 1756 until 1759. In 1760 it joined the Reichsarmee.

Even though Rot Würzburg Infantry and Blau Würzburg Infantry both served in the same army during the 1760 campaign, there were no contacts between them. The relations between the staffs of the two regiments were not very good! Heavy losses had placed an increasing strain on Würzburg's limited resources, and the Bishop of Würzburg pressed the Austrians into amalgamating his two regiments into a single regiment entitled Kaiserlich Würzburg consisting of 3 bns and 2 grenadier coys. The reorganisation was made official on December 7. This raises the question as to what uniform the new regiment wore?

IR 28 Wied-Runkel

This is the last of the regular Austrian regiments I'm painting. Wied-Runkel had unusual green facings (if I recollect only one other Austrian regiment - Los Rios - had green facings) but this one also had scalloped hat lace which is a bit tricky to paint. Figures, as usual for this army, are a mix of Crusader and Front Rank.

Tomorrow I'll post Red Wurzburg and then some final grenadier companies. That will conclude the 40 battalions painted for this army.

Austrian (Hungarian) SYW Regiment 53 Simbschen

Here we have another Hungarian regiment for the Austrian army. IR 53 Simbschen was raised in 1747 by Joseph Carl Count von Simbschen. The figures are a mix of Crusader and Front Rank.

We are reaching the end of the task of painting the infantry for this army and will soon be moving on to its large cavalry compliment. Just two foot regiments and a host of grenadiers to go.

New Napoleonics on eBay

I have just put onto eBay five newly painted battalions of French Napoleonic Infantry in bicorne. Tomorrow I'll put onto that site another five battalions but in the shako. Then soon four battalions of the Guard. Each battalion is 24 figures and I've used the new Reinforcements packs from Front Rank which are lovely new sculpts. Here is one of the links:
